Each exchange has its own requirements.

New companies just starting out cannot jump straight to the NYSE. In order to list there, you must have been in business 10 years, market cap of several hundred million, etc.

Amex is the next prestigious, must have been in business 5 yrs, smaller market cap, etc.

Everyone usually starts out on the Nasdaq.

In addition to David’s description, your sponsor brokers can decide which exchange you will go to, usually Amex is the easiest, but if you pay more and sponsor is tough enough, you can trade in NYSE or NSDAQ.
the case you are talking about is “you have to know the type of stock is trading”, some companies issue many different stocks, preferred #A, preferred #B, their symbol is a little different, may be in different exchange too. Same stock can not be traded in different exchange.
